The year is slowly coming to an end. In 2018, I wrote series of article for the first time. I started this creative journey with the readiness to surprise myself and my readers. I wasn’t aware that I would create a model that illustrates the relationship between Human Centered Management and the Why of an organisation.
The journey toward the model wasn’t a straight line. I made mistakes that I saw later on and wondered if I should just change everything again and again until the published articles were “perfect”. I ended up modifying some lines and renaming the model at least five times.
Here is the famous model:
I have learned many things while creating this model and I wanted to share my top 5 acknowledgement with you.
Top 5 acknowledgement
Finding a name for an idea is challenging but fun
Naming the model felt like giving a name to a child. You want something that people can understand, remember and prononce while transmitting a message. I had to consider how people could interpret the words I used. Furthermore, I was still refining the model while naming it. The first “names” that came to my mind did not fit what the model was in the end.
I had exchanges with some people which made me realize things I did not see and the “awesome idea” I had two days ago did not sound that great anymore.
iterative model creation
Illustrating what happens in my mind when I speak about management was an intense cognitive journey. Luckily, my discussion buddies, who are specialized in psychology and adult learning, help me reconsider the ideas I was putting out in the world.
I was blind to my own blindness. There were things I did not consider until I received external inputs. Sometimes watching a video or reading an article on another subject gave me perspectives that drove me to rethink the model.
I was sometimes judgemental regarding some quadrants of the modelI. This is a bit ironic when you know that I “prone” non judgement. This realization helped me reconsider the way I explained the model. Knowing that my judgement came from my personal preferences helped me soften my tone and remind myself that each one of us finds happiness and well-being in different contexts.
Accepting being wrong
I am conscious that I may have forgotten an important piece of the puzzle. I also know that this model will keep evolving until I find a way to define more precisely what is under each quadrant.
It is obviously not peer-reviewed and my entail logical failure. My ego may not appreciate to be told that my creation is imperfect. I am not trying to achieve perfection but instead to share ideas upon which people can build their own model. This model is a new way to look at management. I do not pretend to know better but to observe from another point of view.
Ideas are universal
An idea can pop up in the brain of many people in different places on earth. I would not be surprised to discover similar models with different names. Maybe you know another model or paradigm that looks the same or whose basic principle are similar.
I love the concept of an idea spreading across humanity without a clear link between the creators.
I see so many talented and unhappy people who believe that work is just the way it is. I want to share a new vision of the workplace. One that is centered on humans and the development of an organisation. I want to open up possibilities that you were not aware of. Something different is possible but we have to imagine it before it becomes reality.
Every technological and social invention we benefit from today came from dreamers who inspired doers. I am a dreamer that participate at her level into the creation process.
How should a human centered management look like in your opinion?
