This article belongs to the Purposeful Organization concept series in which I describe each section of a quadrant model. By the way, this model is based on two criteria. On the one hand, the desired level of personal development. On the other hand, the level of joined effort around a common goal.
A model will never solve your problem! However, it helps change perspective and open up your mind to a new paradigm. Your consciousness and focus shift. A model has the potential to reveal an aspect you did not see earlier. It can fuel your desire to do something differently, to change. This is one of the reason why I created the purposeful organization model.
New consciousness level
No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it. – Albert Einstein
You situate yourself in the world thanks to your belief system. You will have a tendency to position yourself in one quadrant. This model gives you the opportunity to use different lenses in order to challenge your perception. On the one hand, the principle of personal development focuses on the individual. On the other hand, the unifying common purpose focuses on the importance of unifying members around a common purpose.
Your interpretation of the model reveals an aspect of your mental model. A mental model is a kind of map that you built over the years. It filters all information around you to make sence of the world. Each one of us has a mental model which is influenced by our culture, our family and our life experience. As I explained it here.
This model offers a new perspective on the interaction between individuals and their companies. Your understanding of it is an indicator of your value system. You may totally or partially disagree with it. Furthermore, if you agree with the concept developed in the model you will experience a confirmation bias. Your are confirmed in your belief.
A new perspective on a situation offers you the opportunity to change your level of consciousness. Looking at your situation with this quadrant model in mind may open up the door to new possibilities. For that you need to question the status quo.
New questions elevate your consciousness level
Let’s play a little game and imagine that you are totally convinced that this model can help you change your consciousness level. You should interact with the model in order to make it yours. Questions are another tool to change your consciousness level. Subsequently, you can ask yourself those questions and also use them as a reflection tool for your team.
- Where do I situate myself in this model?
- I am in the same quadrant than most of my colleagues?
- What does it mean to find myself in this particular quadrant?
- Would I prefer to be somewhere else?
- Do I want to move to the other quadrant?
- Which obstacles are stopping me?
- What can I do about those obstacles?
- Can I make a plan to move in the new quadrant?
Those questions may shift your understanding of the world as you know it. You may realize that you do not feel well where you are. This new consciousness may be a eye opener. Things get clearer and you can identify what was on your way and what you can do about it.
Each quadrant has advantages and disadvantages. For instance, your personal preference will attract to one more than another. There is nothing wrong with this. The world would be flat and boring if we all wanted and needed the same thing.
Your preferences are not making you better than others. It just shows how the optimal workplace looks like based on personal development and a common purpose.
New consciousness level enables change
I hope that this article confirmed that you are in the right working context or that you need to change something. in fact, your needs and aspirations change over time. The quadrant you are in today may satisfy you right now. It is also possible that you feel the need to change.
However, change is never easy. Change can be a painful process because like the caterpillar we do not know what is coming for us. You can use different change model to help you in your process. I wrote about the Important models to lead change that helped me evolve into the person I am right now.
