Based on “How to create better communication?” Blog

Use this exercise on a regular basis to learn how to better communicate. The aim of this exercise is to provide you with a fresh new way of seeing the world.

This worksheet can also be used for a team workshop! See instruction at the end.

Be aware of your biases toward others communication?

Describe how you see your coworkers. What do you think about their communication? What do you think about the way they communicate? What upsets you in their communication style?

Revealing my biaises

e.g.: I judge the way the person is talking to me.

Who am I judging?

e.g. I judge my boss / colleague / team.

What do those judgement say about my own way of communicating with others? Do I show some default I listed above?

e.g. I judge my boss / colleague / team.

Define the best communication you could ever imagine

Write down the dreamed communication process in your company.

What should be shared and how? Who should be informed, how and when? What information would you receive and at which pace?

e.g. My judgment is based on my belief that the workplace should not be a place for emotional breakdown.

Define what you do not like in the current communication

Write down all the things that upset you about the current communication. Do not try to organize you thoughts now.

e.g. I am never told when meetings are held. Bad news are hidden from me. Karina shares information way too late for me to work properly

Which problems are related to you, others or both you and others?

Note

Compare “what is” and “what could be”

What are the main similarities between the dreamed situation and the current current one?

Notes

What are the main differences between the dreamed situation and the current current one?

Notes

Create the bridge

For each identified differences list at least 3 actions that could be put in place to improve the communication in your team.

Note

One thing at a time

Now that you did this exercise on your own. I invite you to do it as a team.

The section “Be aware of your biases toward others” is for personal reflection and do not have to be shared with the team unless people feel comfortable doing it.

As a team, I invite you to organize a workshop for at least half a day. During this workshop, you will discuss the following subjects.

  • Define the best communication you could ever imagine
  • Define what you do not like in the current communication
  • Compare what is and what could be
  • Create the bridge

Do not hesitate to contact me contact@acgraber.com if you hint and advice on how to organize such a workshop.
